Kids Cook for Mom
by Katrina Munsell
It’s Mom’s special day: this is your chance to remind her just how much you love her. Here are a few special things you can do for Mom or Grandma to go along with those hugs and kisses: Make her breakfast in bed Yogurt parfaits make easy morning masterpieces. Layer fresh berries, yogurt and granola in a pretty glass dish to create a healthy breakfast treat. Or serve waffles or pancakes, with sliced bananas, berries and whipped cream.
Surprise her with a springtime picnic Pack a lunch to go and head for the great outdoors. If the weather isn’t cooperating, don’t worry--spread a blanket across the living room floor, put on some music and create your own sunshine. Skewer strawberries, pineapple chunks, grapes or other fruits to create luscious fruit kabobs. Include crackers, sliced meats and cheeses, along with olives and marinated artichoke hearts to create a zesty antipasto platter. Pack your favorites and you’re off!
Create a fresh herb window box garden for Mom Purchase herb starters from any gardening store and plant in a plastic or clay window box that you’ve decorated. For the finishing touch, label and decorate Popsicle sticks to identify the herbs.
Inspire her with chocolate Create a platter of irresistible chocolate-dipped treats. Melt chocolate morsels with shortening or vegetable oil in the top of a double boiler. Dip Mom’s favorites into the melted chocolate and roll in sprinkles, chopped nuts or shredded coconut. Try dipping strawberries, shortbread cookies, marshmallows or pretzel rods to create a fantastic chocolate display. Mom is sure be tickled by anything you do, but don’t forget the most important part: include a handwritten note or card, straight from the heart, letting her know just how much you care on her special day.
Let Mom relax with a popcorn-and-movie night Rent Mom's favorite movie or one she's been wanting to see. Grab a blanket, let Mom curl up on the couch and prepare a mug of her favorite hot drink. Munch away on homemade treats and enjoy the show.
